International Student of the Year 2025

Winner: Ruth Appiah from Ghana

Ruth has been named International Student of the Year for her extraordinary dedication to community service and advocacy. From leading health education workshops in Ghana to volunteering across multiple organisations in Adelaide, Ruth has consistently demonstrated compassion, leadership, and a commitment to inclusion. 

Her work spans support for refugee families through STTARS, meal preparation for those facing hardship at Baptist Care SA, and broadcasting for Vision Australia Radio to keep people with low vision informed. Ruth also serves as a student representative, advocating for postgraduate research students and contributing to multicultural events across South Australia. 

Balancing academic excellence with extensive volunteer commitments, Ruth exemplifies the values of empathy, resilience, and global citizenship. Her impact is felt both locally and internationally, making her a truly deserving recipient of this year鈥檚 highest honour. 

Ruth is also the winner in the Community Engagement category, which is the first time this category鈥檚 winner has taken out the overall International Student of the Year


Academic Excellence: Postgraduate (Research) Awards

Winner: Nishadi Gamage from Sri Lanka

Nishadi is a PhD candidate in Medicine at the University of Adelaide. Her research is advancing the science of healthy ageing and focuses on enhancing neuroplasticity and neuromuscular function in older adults, aiming to reduce frailty and improve mobility through innovative interventions like non-invasive brain stimulation. 

Originally from Sri Lanka, Nishadi鈥檚 academic journey has been marked by distinction. She graduated top of her class with First-Class Honours in Physiotherapy. She earned a fully funded MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Nottingham, where she received the Research Award and later the Vice-Chancellor鈥檚 Medal for academic excellence and community impact. 

Her current joint PhD between the University of Adelaide and the University of Nottingham has enabled her to conduct cutting-edge research across both institutions, resulting in nine peer-reviewed publications, over 350 citations, and multiple conference presentations. She won first place in the 3 Minute Thesis competition and received 大象视频Adelaide鈥檚 Academic Excellence Award in 2024. 

Beyond research, Nishadi is a dedicated educator, student mentor, and community contributor. She has worked as a physiotherapist in aged-care facilities, served as a Student Guide for international students, and held leadership roles in postgraduate student associations. Her dual commitment to research and clinical practice reflects her mission to bridge science and care, ensuring older adults benefit from evidence-based interventions. 

Nishadi鈥檚 vision is to become a global leader in neuromuscular physiology, promoting healthy ageing through research, education, and compassionate care. 


Highly Commended: Ishara Rathnayake from Sri Lanka

Driven by a passion for sustainable innovation in the built environment, Ishara is pioneering new approaches to resource efficiency in construction. As a PhD candidate in Construction Management at the University of South Australia, her research explores how sharing economy models, enabled by digital platforms, can transform traditional practices, reduce waste, and promote circularity across the industry. 

Originally from Sri Lanka, Ishara graduated top of her class with a BSc (Hons) in Facilities Management from the University of Moratuwa, earning multiple awards, including the Gold Medal for academic excellence and the Vidya Jyothi Prof. Dayantha S. Wijesekara Award for Most Outstanding Graduate. She later completed an MSc by Research and was selected for the Future Scholars International Programme in Hong Kong. 

At UniSA, Ishara has produced 21 refereed publications and received two prestigious scholarships. Her research has attracted international attention and supports both industry innovation and academic advancement. She has lectured and tutored across multiple construction courses, mentored new students, and collaborated on ethical finance research with UniSA Business. 

Beyond academia, Ishara contributes to the South Australian community through volunteer work, mentoring, and sports. She co-founded a netball team for international students and volunteers at campus events. Her global collaborations span the UK, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, and she actively engages with industry partners to promote sustainable construction practices. 

Ishara鈥檚 goal is to become a lecturer who bridges research and practice, preparing future professionals to lead in a more adaptive, collaborative, and sustainable construction industry. 


Academic Excellence: Postgraduate (Coursework) Awards

Winner: Shahzeb Aslam from Pakistan

Shahzeb has excelled academically during his Master of Cybersecurity at the University of Adelaide, consistently achieving High Distinctions in every subject and maintaining a perfect grade point average. 

His selection as Valedictorian for his graduating class is a testament to his dedication and scholarly excellence. Shahzeb鈥檚 studies have focused on addressing real-world challenges in cybersecurity, including developing innovative solutions to improve the safety of critical infrastructure and protect organisations from digital threats. 

His work has contributed to reducing risks in areas such as industrial systems and agricultural technology, demonstrating the practical impact of his expertise. 

Beyond his academic success, Shahzeb has made a significant contribution to university life and the broader community. He has volunteered over 100 hours as an International Student Ambassador, supporting fellow students and helping newcomers settle into university life. As an Academic Integrity Ambassador, he has promoted ethical study practices, leading workshops and creating educational resources now used across the university. 

Shahzeb鈥檚 leadership extends into the wider community, where he has mentored more than 100 international students, organised multicultural events, and represented South Australia in national campaigns that showcase the state鈥檚 educational strengths. He has contributed to university initiatives, including curriculum development and policy reviews, and played an active role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. 

His achievements reflect not only his academic talent but also his dedication to supporting others, promoting integrity, and making a positive difference within the university and the broader community. He also won the 2025 Peer Support Award.


Highly Commended: Jeff Keiser Siason from the Philippines

Jeff has demonstrated remarkable academic achievement during his Master of Nursing studies at Flinders University. Achieving Distinctions across his last two semesters and maintaining a strong GPA, Jeff鈥檚 commitment to excellence is evident in both his academic results and his determination to succeed. His journey has been shaped by resilience and a genuine passion for nursing, inspired by the desire to offer compassionate care to those in vulnerable situations. 

His contributions extend well beyond the classroom. As a student mentor with International Student Services, he has supported new students, sharing his experiences and offering guidance to help others feel welcomed and understood. He is a certified Mental Health First Aider, using his training to actively support peers and encourage mental health awareness within the university community. 

Jeff has also developed two innovative apps designed to empower fellow learners and enhance the student experience. 

In addition to his university involvement, he works as a Mental Health Disability Support Worker, helping vulnerable South Australians live with dignity and independence. His commitment to empathy and inclusivity is reflected in his vision for nursing leadership, aiming to improve patient care and safety for culturally and linguistically diverse groups and other communities who may feel marginalised. 

Jeff鈥檚 achievements highlight not only his academic talent but also his leadership, compassion, and dedication to making a positive impact within the university and the broader South Australian community. 


Academic Excellence: Undergraduate Awards 

Winner: Veanna Ranka from Singapore

Veanna鈥檚 academic journey at Flinders University stands out for both excellence and ambition. Currently studying for a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences and Doctor of Medicine, she has maintained an outstanding GPA of 6.87, earning two Chancellor鈥檚 Letters of Recommendation for her academic performance and leadership within the university community. 

Among hundreds of applicants, she was selected for a prestigious summer research scholarship, with her team鈥檚 findings set for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, an impressive milestone early in her medical career. 

Veanna鈥檚 commitment to the specialised field of aerospace medicine has been recognised nationally, as she is the only medical student in Australia awarded the John Lane Aerospace Medicine Trust Scholarship. 

Beyond her academic achievements, she is deeply involved in university and community initiatives. As a Wellbeing Ambassador and President of the Health and Human Rights Group, she advocates for mental health, environmental causes, refugee support, and disability rights, leading fundraising efforts and strategic discussions that shape the university鈥檚 future. Her leadership has resulted in over $6,000 raised for important causes this year alone. 

Veanna鈥檚 impact extends across South Australia and beyond. She coordinates national health initiatives, organises educational events for medical students, and leads large-scale projects such as assembling birthing kits for women in need across multiple countries. Her dedication to humanitarian work and healthcare advocacy is matched by her vision for pioneering new frontiers in medicine, including rural health and space travel. 


Highly Commended: Hailan Yang from China

Hailan has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a deep commitment to the field of psychology during her Bachelor of Psychology (Advanced) studies at the University of Adelaide. With a GPA of 6.3, she has consistently excelled in her coursework while actively pursuing opportunities to expand her knowledge and practical experience in clinical psychology. 

Her academic journey has been enriched by participation in a range of professional development activities, including conferences, workshops, and internships focused on mental health, autism care, sports psychology, and end-of-life support. These experiences have not only strengthened her understanding of psychological practice but also affirmed her aspiration to pursue a Master of Clinical Psychology. 

Hailan鈥檚 dedication to community engagement is evident through her volunteer work and certifications in mental health first aid and disability support. She has contributed to initiatives aimed at reducing stigma around mental illness and improving care for vulnerable populations. Her involvement in these areas reflects a strong sense of empathy and a desire to make a meaningful impact through psychology.

Highly Commended: Luca Teng from China

Luca鈥檚 academic journey is defined by both excellence and a deep commitment to educational equity. Pursuing a dual degree in Teaching (Secondary) and Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the University of Adelaide, he has consistently demonstrated outstanding achievement, earning four High Distinctions and a Distinction in Semester 1, 2025, while excelling in a demanding rural teaching placement at Renmark High School. 

His approach to learning is methodical and reflective, breaking down complex concepts into accessible lessons and using feedback to continually improve both his own understanding and his teaching practice. 

Luca鈥檚 impact extends well beyond the classroom. As an International Student Ambassador, he provides guidance to prospective students, leads campus tours, and creates resources that make the transition to university life smoother for others. 

He has also volunteered with local charities, served as a student representative during the UoA-UniSA merger, and supported international events as an interpreter and translator. These contributions have strengthened the international student experience and built bridges between the university, the South Australian community, and global audiences.

Winner: Mahima Bhatt from India

Mahima's journey at the South Australian Institute of Business and Technology (SAIBT) exemplifies resilience, academic excellence, and a passion for helping others. Enrolled in the Diploma of Health Science, Mahima has achieved a GPA of 6.33, earning High Distinctions in key subjects such as Human Anatomy, Aboriginal Health, and Public Health. Her academic success is matched by her enthusiasm for learning and her commitment to personal growth, as she adapted to a new academic environment and embraced the challenges of studying in Australia. 

Beyond her studies, Mahima has played an active role in the SAIBT community. As a Student Ambassador, she has volunteered at orientation events, organised creative activities to welcome new students, and participated in the Peer Mentorship Program, guiding international students as they adjusted to life in Adelaide. 

Her involvement as a Brand Ambassador for IDP Australia and participation in 大象视频Adelaide events, including performing at the Students Got Talent Awards, reflect her dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive student community.

Highly Commended: Ivy Cao from Vietnam

Ivy's educational journey in South Australia is a story of determination, academic excellence, and meaningful community contribution. 

Arriving from Vietnam at just 14, Ivy embraced the challenges of a new country and language, quickly making Adelaide her home and striving for excellence in every aspect of her studies. Her dedication has been reflected in a remarkable GPA of 6.75 and recognition on the Dean鈥檚 List commendations. 

Ivy's pathway studies have provided a strong foundation for her Bachelor of Commerce, allowing her to build knowledge and skills that seamlessly transition into her university degree. Her commitment to learning has already opened doors to professional success: securing an internship and then a permanent part-time accountant role at PKF Adelaide, all before graduation. This achievement, recognised by the Chief Financial Officer, is a testament to the practical value of her pathway and her readiness to contribute to the business community. 

Beyond academics, Ivy has made a significant impact through service and leadership. She initiated a peer-mentoring network for international students in high school, helping newcomers feel welcomed and supported. At university, she has worked with the Flinders Business Students Association to develop the 鈥淕reenify鈥 app, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices across South Australia.

Academic Excellence: Vocational Education Training Awards 

Winner: Celeste Oriana Lunardi from Argentina

Celeste's study journey is a testament to resilience, personal growth, and a deep commitment to helping others. 

Arriving in Australia from Argentina with limited English, Celeste began her studies in General and Academic English before embarking on a Certificate IV and then a Diploma in Community Services. Overcoming initial doubts and language barriers, she developed the confidence and skills needed to thrive in a new academic environment, supported by encouraging lecturers and classmates. 

Through her studies and placements, Celeste has worked with families from diverse cultural backgrounds, applying empathy, patience, and multicultural understanding to support those navigating new challenges. 

Her role as a Lifestyle and Wellbeing Worker in an aged care facility allows her to provide emotional support and meaningful activities for residents, putting her learning into practice and making a positive impact on their daily lives. 

Celeste鈥檚 contributions extend beyond her coursework. She volunteers with the Multicultural Communities Council of SA, participating in art workshops, playgroups, and special programs that foster social connection and wellbeing. Her work with migrant families and non-English speakers is informed by her own experience as a newcomer, offering encouragement and practical support to help others achieve their goals. 

Despite facing challenges, including adapting to a new culture and turning down a leadership opportunity due to study commitments, Celeste has demonstrated resilience and responsibility. 

Her ambition to become a social worker and continue learning about multicultural communities is inspired by her experiences in South Australia, where she has gained valuable skills and confidence to make a lasting difference. 

Highly Commended: Celita Nathalia Vasconcelos Perdigao from Brazil

Celita has excelled in her Diploma of Horticulture Management studies, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and practical innovation. Building on her previous studies in agronomy in Brazil, she has embraced the challenge of studying in a new language and academic environment, developing both technical and management skills essential for a career in horticulture. 

Her academic journey has been marked by hands-on projects, including designing sustainable landscapes using native South Australian plants. 

Celita鈥檚 work has focused on promoting biodiversity and resource efficiency, applying techniques such as rainwater collection, topography modification, and composting to minimise environmental impact. She has gained proficiency in AutoCAD for professional design, as well as soil sampling and analysis, and has developed a solid understanding of local legislation and best practices in workplace health and safety. 

Her contributions extend beyond her studies. She has volunteered at the South Australian Botanic Gardens, applying her horticultural knowledge to garden maintenance and engaging with the public to share her passion for the environment. In her professional role as a crop scout at an Integrated Pest Management company, she promotes sustainable pest control practices that benefit both crop health and the wider community. 

Overcoming the challenges of studying in English and adapting to a new culture, she has shown resilience and determination. 

Her ambition is to pursue postgraduate studies in sustainability and become an entrepreneur, developing technologies that support ecological approaches such as integrated pest management and smart irrigation. 


Academic Excellence: Schools Awards 

Winner: Zhexun Gu from China

Zhexun has distinguished himself as an exceptional student at St John鈥檚 Grammar School, consistently achieving academic excellence throughout his studies. 

With straight A鈥檚 across all subjects and the Academic Excellence Award for three consecutive years, his dedication to learning is evident. He is on track to achieve A+ grades in advanced subjects such as Specialist Mathematics and Physics, and his outstanding performance led to selection for the University of Adelaide鈥檚 Headstart Program, where he earned a High Distinction in university-level Programming while still in Year 12. 

Zhexun鈥檚 academic journey is complemented by a passion for STEM and hands-on innovation. He has participated in the AusOcean Network Blue programme, building and maintaining ocean sensor rigs for environmental monitoring, and contributed to the University of Queensland鈥檚 Young Change Maker program, developing solutions to real-world challenges. 

His achievements in national competitions, including Distinctions in the ICAS and Australian Mathematics Competitions, further highlight his academic strengths. 

Beyond the classroom, Zhexun has made a significant impact on his school community. As captain and founding member of the Robotics Club, he led the team to national success and a top 40% ranking at the World Championships. He has also contributed as a mentor, event organiser, and head referee for interschool volleyball competitions, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship. 

Zhexun鈥檚 commitment extends to the wider community, with involvement in cancer fundraising, sustainable agriculture projects, and marine conservation. 

His journey reflects resilience, leadership, and a drive to use education and innovation to make a positive difference in South Australia and beyond. 


Highly Commended: Lysa Meng from Cambodia

Lysa has shown remarkable resilience and achievement since joining Brighton Secondary School as an international student from Cambodia. 

Adjusting to a new education system and culture, she quickly distinguished herself academically, earning an Academic Achievement Certificate by the end of her first semester. 

Her passion for mathematics is evident through a series of impressive accolades, including a gold medal in the Cambodia Mathematics Olympiad, a silver in the Angkor Mathematics Competition (Global Round), and a bronze in the Preliminary World Mathematics Team Championship. 

She continued her success in Australia, earning a silver medal in the MPCH Olympiad and participating in the Australian Mathematics Competition and MASA Quiz Night, where she represented her school as the only senior entrant. 

Beyond her academic pursuits, Lysa is committed to making a positive impact in her school and the wider community. She volunteers with Food on the Table, helping to prepare and distribute meals for those in need, and at Adelaide Zoo, where she supports staff and contributes to animal welfare initiatives. 

She is also an active member of her school鈥檚 crochet club and is working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, further developing her teamwork and leadership skills. 

Lysa鈥檚 journey has not been without challenges, but her willingness to step out of her comfort zone and embrace new opportunities has been recognised by her school community. 

Her aspiration to become a nurse practitioner, inspired by her experiences in both Cambodia and Australia, reflects her dedication to combining academic excellence with compassion and service. 


Community Engagement Awards


Winner: Ruth Appiah from Ghana

Ruth has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service, making a meaningful impact both in her home country of Ghana and in Adelaide. 

She has taken on a variety of volunteer roles, including facilitating workshops on sexual and reproductive health for young people in Ghana, mentoring girls through the Planned Parenthood Association, and supporting a wide range of community initiatives since moving to Australia. 

Ruth has continued to make a significant impact through a range of volunteer roles since moving to Australia. At Baptist Care SA, she helps prepare and serve meals for individuals and families facing hardship. Her work with the Survivors of Torture and Trauma Rehabilitation Service (STTARS) involves supporting refugee children and adults, helping to create safe spaces for healing and connection. 

She also volunteers at Vision Australia Radio, reading newspapers and publications live on air to keep people with low vision informed and connected. Her involvement extends to supporting multicultural events and serving as a student representative, advocating for postgraduate research students. 

Ruth鈥檚 community service is characterised by empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a genuine desire to foster inclusion and empowerment. 

She has overcome challenges such as language barriers by embracing patience, adaptability, and continuous learning. Her ability to balance her academic pursuits with her extensive volunteer commitments is a testament to her discipline and sense of purpose. 


Highly Commended: Zhensheng Zhang from China

Whether supporting residents in Adelaide or empowering youth internationally, Zhensheng has made community engagement a central part of his life alongside his Master of Engineering studies. 

Zhang鈥檚 volunteering spans a wide range of roles, from promoting social inclusion through the City of Adelaide Council鈥檚 Community Wellbeing and Pooch Pal programs to assisting at the Australian Red Cross Retail Shop, where he developed practical skills in customer service and teamwork while supporting humanitarian efforts. 

His commitment to making a difference extends beyond Australia. As a United Nations Volunteer for the Africa Youth for Peace and Development Program, he provided education and training to marginalised youth, helping them build confidence and access employment opportunities. His involvement in the Global IQ Connect Programme further strengthened his intercultural understanding and ability to collaborate across cultures. 

Through these experiences, Zhensheng has contributed to social inclusion, youth empowerment, and intercultural understanding, both locally and globally. 

He has overcome challenges such as adapting to new cultural contexts and building trust with people from diverse backgrounds, developing adaptability, empathy, and leadership along the way. 

Balancing his academic and volunteer commitments with careful planning, he sees volunteering as a complement to his studies, enriching his personal and professional growth. 

His story is a testament to the impact that dedicated community service can have, and to the value of using one鈥檚 skills to benefit others in meaningful ways. 


Peer Support Awards  

Winner: Shahzeb Aslam from Pakistan

Shahzeb has made an outstanding contribution to the international student community at the University of Adelaide through his dedicated peer support and advocacy. 

Over the past two years, Shahzeb has reached more than 500 international students, providing guidance, mentorship, and practical support across a range of platforms. 

As Youth Representative and Executive Member of the Pakistani Australian Association South Australia (PAASA), he has mentored over 100 students, helping them navigate academic challenges, cultural adjustment, accommodation, and mental health concerns. 

His leadership in organising cross-cultural events and community gatherings has created safe spaces for students to connect and build lasting support networks. 

In his role as International Student Ambassador, Shahzeb has offered personalised advice to prospective students, addressing the realities of transitioning to life in Adelaide and providing resources such as an Accommodation Tips Video to help newcomers avoid common pitfalls. 

As an Academic Integrity Ambassador, he has advocated for international students by leading workshops and contributing to policy reviews, ensuring that cultural differences are recognised and addressed within university guidelines.  

Shahzeb鈥檚 impact extends to institutional change, representing international student interests on the Student Advisory Panel during the Adelaide University merger and developing a digital resource hub for PAASA. His initiatives have led to increased student retention, improved understanding of academic integrity, and the creation of sustainable peer mentorship programmes. 

Balancing these commitments with academic excellence, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, empathy, and resilience. His efforts have transformed the international student experience in Adelaide, empowering others to thrive and fostering a culture of support and inclusion. 

Shahzeb also won the 2025 Academic Excellence: Postgraduate (Coursework) Award.


Highly Commended: Tahseen Taiyabah from Bangladesh

Tahseen has shown outstanding dedication to supporting international students throughout the past year. As an International Peer Mentor, she has provided both individual and group support to help new students settle into university life.

She has played a key role in orientation activities, answered academic and wellbeing queries, and represented the university at campus tours, reaching nearly 1,000 prospective and commencing students. 

In her capacity as Vice President and now President of the Adelaide University Bangladeshi Students鈥 Society, Tahseen has helped to organise major cultural events, including the society鈥檚 largest Bengali New Year celebration, which brought together more than 200 students and encouraged cross-cultural understanding. 

Her leadership also extends to her work as Marketing Manager for Robogals Adelaide and as STEMM Officer for WiSTEMS, where she has promoted STEM outreach and created inclusive opportunities for women in STEM.

Outstanding Alumni Winner: Dr Arun Kaffle from Nepal

Graduate of: University of South Australia

Studied:  (PhD) in Philosophy 

Dr Kaffle鈥檚 career is a testament to the global impact of South Australian education. 

After completing his PhD at the University of South Australia, he returned to Nepal, where he now leads the Food and Nutrition Security Enhancement Project (FANSEP II) as Project Director for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

In this role, he oversees climate-smart agricultural practices, market-led production, and nutrition-centric programmes, directly supporting over 55,000 marginal and vulnerable communities across the country. 

His professional journey is marked by leadership and innovation. As Deputy Director General of Nepal鈥檚 Department of Agriculture, he was responsible for national programme development, monitoring, and evaluation. His expertise in sustainable agriculture, honed through research in both Adelaide and Kathmandu, has shaped policy and practice at the highest levels. 

He has published extensively in international journals and played a pivotal role in designing major initiatives such as the Prime Minister Agriculture Modernisation Project, which has transformed Nepal鈥檚 agricultural sector. 

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr Kaffle has remained closely connected to the South Australian and Nepalese communities. He has contributed to multicultural events, supported welfare initiatives, and guided fellow students and professionals.


Outstanding Alumni Winner: Manvi Gandhi from India

Curiosity and a drive to create positive change have shaped Manvi's remarkable career in South Australia. 

From her early days as an international student, Manvi embraced every opportunity to gain hands-on experience, quickly progressing from internships and teaching roles to leadership positions across academia, industry, and government. 

Today, as Program Manager (Health Sciences) and Lecturer at SAIBT, UniSA, she leads a team of academic staff, designing forward-thinking curricula that prepare students for the realities of the health sciences sector. 

Manvi鈥檚 professional journey is marked by versatility and impact. Her work as an environmental scientist at CSIRO contributed to remediation strategies for emerging chemicals, while her role as a Bushfire Management Officer supported risk assessments and resilience planning for the state. 

At the City of Adelaide, she led smart city initiatives, managing major assets and championing sustainability. 

A passionate advocate for diversity in STEM, Manvi mentors students, inspires young women through outreach and ambassador roles, and actively promotes South Australia as a destination for world-class education. 

Her efforts have been recognised with multiple awards for teaching excellence and leadership. Through her commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and real-world problem-solving, she continues to empower the next generation to thrive and lead in their chosen fields. 



Rising Star Alumni Winner: Jingkai Lin from China

Graduate of: University of Adelaide  

Studied: Bachelor of Engineering 

Innovation and impact define the journey of Jingkai, whose career has rapidly evolved from international student to postdoctoral research fellow. 

Driven by a passion for sustainable solutions, his research addresses two of the world鈥檚 most pressing challenges: plastic pollution and the clean energy transition. 

His pioneering work in catalytic systems not only transforms plastic waste into valuable products but also generates green hydrogen, directly supporting South Australia鈥檚 ambitions in renewable energy and the circular economy. 

Jingkai鈥檚 influence extends well beyond the laboratory. As a lecturer and mentor, he has supported and inspired more than fifty students, supervised award-winning research projects, and contributed to maintaining international standards in engineering education through his involvement with the Institution of Chemical Engineers. 

His commitment to academic excellence is matched by his dedication to community engagement, regularly participating in University Open Days and professional conferences to showcase the opportunities available in South Australia. 

International collaboration is a hallmark of Jingkai鈥檚 career, with partnerships spanning Germany, Singapore, and China, and publications in leading scientific journals. 

His story exemplifies how South Australian education empowers graduates to achieve global impact. Through research, teaching, and outreach, Jingkai continues to champion innovation, sustainability, and the value of studying in Adelaide, inspiring the next generation of engineers and researchers. 


Rising Star Alumni Highly Commended: Lashika Weerakoon from Sri Lanka

Graduate of: Flinders University

Studied: Master of Biotechnology 

A passion for advancing patient care through scientific discovery is at the heart of Lashika鈥檚 journey. 

As a Medical Scientist with the Haematology Clinical Trials Unit at the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network, she plays a pivotal role in coordinating and managing clinical trials that bring innovative cancer therapies to patients. 

Her responsibilities span from implementing complex study protocols and safeguarding patient wellbeing, to collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and liaising with global pharmaceutical partners. 

Lashika鈥檚 career in South Australia began with a Master of Biotechnology at Flinders University, where she excelled in both coursework and research, earning recognition for academic excellence. Her early professional experiences included research on breast cancer resistance and mentoring students as an academic demonstrator. 

These formative roles laid the groundwork for her transition into clinical research, where she now oversees trials that provide patients with access to cutting-edge treatments and contribute to the global advancement of cancer therapies. 

Beyond her scientific achievements, she is a dedicated advocate for international education in South Australia, where she has promoted her university through ambassador roles, contributed to program development, and supported prospective students through outreach and mentorship. 


Student Association of the Year Award 

Winner:  Adelaide University Vietnamese Students Association 

Award accepted by: President, Jennifer Tran 

The Vietnamese Students Association at the University of Adelaide champions initiatives that celebrate Vietnamese culture while fostering inclusivity and intercultural friendships. 

As of Semester 1, 2025, the club had around 160 active members and had already organised six major events, engaging over 500 students and collaborating with multiple cultural associations. 

The Association is dedicated to creating welcoming spaces that support international students, encourage cultural exchange, and build meaningful community connections. It also plays a key role in leadership development, event planning, and sponsorship coordination, ensuring its programs are accessible, engaging, and impactful.
